It’s easy to feel like we’re supposed to be thriving right now.
The sun is shining. The days are long. And Instagram is flooded with beach photos and smiles.
But what if you’re just… tired?
And everything feels like too much? Even if it wasn’t a few weeks ago.
You’re not broken. You’re not alone.
Many midlife women experience the summer blues but few talk about it.
And as uncomfortable as it can be, this emotional season has so much to teach us about what we need, what we want, and how we care for ourselves.
The summer blues send us important messages about life and the need for self-care. Each one stands as a gentle reminder that you don’t have to earn your rest, your worth, or your place in this world.
Here’s what your summer sadness might really be trying to tell you.
Seasonal depression doesn’t only show up in winter. For many women, summer disrupts routines, ramps up caregiving demands, and stirs up unprocessed grief or transitions.
If you’ve felt more anxious, scattered, or down lately, that’s valid. The summer blues are real and they’re whispering that something inside you needs tending. Pay attention to those whispers and take care of yourself this summer.
More than any other season, summer amplifies social comparison and body image pressures. Especially for women over 40.
You’re expected to host the BBQ, plan the vacation, look amazing in a swimsuit, and somehow still be the emotional anchor for your family.
You’re in a pressure cooker and it’s exhausting. And unfair.
The lesson? You don’t have to do it all. Take time to cool down this summer. Both mentally and physically.
Midlife burnout is real. And pushing through it without care isn’t strength. It’s survival mode.
What if you treated your exhaustion as sacred data instead of a flaw?
What if you gave yourself permission to rest before you’re forced to?
This summer, let’s stop shaming ourselves for being human and time to connect with the people and experiences that create meaning.
Start by writing down 3 things that drain you and 3 things you can replace them with that fuel your inner fire.
Self-care isn’t all bubble baths and spa days.
It’s a skill set. A way to regulate our emotions, reset our energy, and stay grounded when life gets hard.
It looks different for everyone. For me, it’s leaving the office during lunch. For others, it’s sewing, baking, loving on the fur babies, or hitting the gym.
Take time to find the things that help you take care of yourself. Because you’re worth it.
Anticipating stress, loneliness, or energy crashes during summer doesn’t make you negative. It makes you prepared.
You plan ahead for meetings, vacations, and diaper blowouts. Why wouldn’t you plan ahead for emotional emergencies? Or better yet, cope ahead so the emotions don’t pull the fire alarm.
Planning for your needs isn’t selfish. It’s wise.
Find one way to cope ahead this week and do it.
Shrinking physically, emotionally, or energetically is often how women cope with feeling unseen. But self-care invites you to expand again.
Take up the space you deserve.
Wear the swimsuit. Speak the truth. Make room for your needs.
You are meant to do great things. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
You don’t need fireworks or fanfare to declare what you’re done tolerating.
Self-care becomes radical when it liberates you from guilt, perfectionism, and other people’s expectations.
What do you want freedom from this summer? Write it down so you don’t forget.
