One night, my male puppy simply would not go to sleep. He was irritated, restless, and increasingly vocal, growling at our older female dog until I finally moved her kennel to another room.
The second she was gone, he launched into a full-blown display: rolling around the floor where her kennel used to be and refusing to sleep in his usual bed.
I asked my daughter if he missed her and she told me he was scent-marking to cover her smell in the room.
“Why would he do that?” I asked.
She shrugged and replied, “Because dogs are petty.”
It’s funny because it’s true. We all have moments when we’d rather mark our territory than collaborate. Moments when we feel unseen, undermined, passed over, and ignored.
When that happens, it’s easy to fall into human versions of scent-marking:
We convince ourselves we’re “setting boundaries,” “being strategic,” or “not letting them win”. But really? We’re being petty.
And deep down, we know it.
Here’s the truth: When we don’t feel seen, we start scrambling for power in whatever way we can. Petty behaviors are just wounded reactions to feeling invisible.
Here’s the risk: we start defining ourselves by the very behaviors that keep us small.
We let frustration speak louder than purpose. We protect our territory instead of expanding our influence.
We act like dogs scent-marking a corner when we should lead, uplift, and co-create.
When you’re grounded in your identity, when your voice has been claimed, and your purpose is clear, you don’t have to bark, roll, or mark your space. You just show up. Steady. Powerful. Unbothered.
Here’s how emotional intelligence helps:
Next time you’re tempted to make a point, claim a space, or prove someone wrong, pause and ask:
You are not too old. You are not too late. And you do not have to prove your worth by wrestling for space that was always yours to begin with. You’re not here to scent-mark.
You’re here to collaborate, create, and lead.
