When Summer Doesn’t Feel Sunny

Understanding the Summer Blues

A roadmap built on emotional intelligence for women in midlife

Summer is supposed to feel light.

The days are longer, the skies are bluer, and the world seems to expect you to match the mood: smiling, social, and soaking it all in.

But sometimes, you just can’t.

If you’re like me and depression is an old acquaintance, the sunshine outside doesn’t always match the dreary weather inside.

Then, summer feels heavier than happy.

You might feel broken. Or ungrateful. Or like you want to be left alone. And that’s OK.

What Are the Summer Blues?

Most of us have heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that typically shows up in the winter months. But what many people don’t know is that a small percentage of people—especially women—experience a summer version of it.

The symptoms might look different, but the emotional weight is just as real:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Anxiety or irritability
  • Feeling emotionally flat or disconnected
  • Loss of appetite or feeling overstimulated
  • Isolation or disinterest in summer activities you “should” enjoy
  • Exhaustion. Pure mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual exhaustion.

For midlife women, the summer blues can hit especially hard. It’s the season of “shoulds”:

You should feel grateful for the sunshine.
You should feel excited your kids are home.
You should be soaking up life.

But when your nervous system is fried, your calendar is overflowing, and your body is whispering (or yelling), “Slow down,” no amount of sunshine can override that.

You’re Not Failing. You’re Responding to Pressure.

Depression and emotional heaviness aren’t personal failures. They’re messages from your system saying, “This is too much.”

You might be carrying the invisible weights of grief, burnout, caregiving, changes in your body or identity. The bright, busy tempo of summer doesn’t always leave space for those feelings to breathe.

This season can feel especially disorienting if you’re in a place of transition:
Divorce. Empty nest. Job loss. Health scares. A changing relationship with your body or sense of purpose.

The contrast between the world’s energy and your own can deepen feelings of invisibility. Everyone else seems to be thriving. Why can’t you?

But here’s the truth: You’re not the only one. And you don’t have to navigate it alone.

How to Get Support for Summer Depression

If your symptoms are persistent, especially if they include hopelessness, fatigue, or changes in sleep and appetite, it’s important to seek professional help. Talk to your doctor. Find a therapist. There’s no shame in needing care.

As a coach, I don’t diagnose or treat depression. But I do support women in building the kind of emotional scaffolding that makes healing possible.

Together, we explore how to:

  • Reconnect with your body and what it needs
  • Name and honor your emotional experience
  • Use emotional intelligence to move from stuck to self-led
  • Create tiny, doable rituals that help you feel safe, seen, and supported

This isn’t about pretending everything is fine or quick fixes. This is deep, embodied care for the woman you’ve become.

That’s why I created Self-Care Saturdays, a monthly space to gather, breathe, and gently re-enter your life from the inside out. This event is part of the Invisible to Unstoppable journey for women reclaiming voice, identity, and purpose in midlife.

Self-Care Saturday, August 16, 2025: Taking the Heat Out of the Summer Blues

This 3-hour long, virtual escape is designed for midlife women who feel invisible, overwhelmed, or just “off” this time of year and need some time to recharge, reconnect, and relax.

Our team has put together a special lineup for you, covering self-care for your mind, body, and soul. You will spend time with other women like you and create a Self-Care Bag you can stock and save for those moments when you need to put yourself in a self-care time out.

This month is all about making room for what’s real and finding joy and meaning on your own terms.

Mind – Let Your Summer Voice be Heard

We are going to talk about the many ways our voices are turned off in the summer and how that builds the emotional heat for some of us. We’ll talk about how journaling and reflection tied to emotional intelligence can help us cool down and find the things we really need to say. (So we don’t say the things we shouldn’t.)

Body – Feeding the Soul with Summertime Sweets

Learn how baking can ground you in peace and emotional presence. As we stir, pour, and smell the caramel warmth of fresh brownies, we’ll explore how the act of making something sweet for yourself can soothe stress, awaken your senses, and offer a moment of mindfulness in motion.

Soul –

In this hands-on creative session, we’ll sew our own Self-Care Bags to serve as tangible reminders that your needs matter. Each stitch becomes a symbol of the care you’re allowed to give yourself. By the end, you’ll leave not just with a beautiful bag, but with a toolkit to refill your emotional well.

Finding Emotional Space when Summer Feels Heavy

You don’t have to earn rest.

You don’t have to fake cheerfulness to be worthy of love or belonging.

And you don’t have to do it all alone.

If summer doesn’t feel sunny right now, that’s okay. Let this be your permission slip to take the pressure off, to soften, to exhale.

And when you’re ready, let’s take the next small step together.

Check out our Self-Care Saturday events page and reserve your spot today.
