Like many women over the age of 40, I got a late start in my career. While my same-age male peers were climbing the ladder, I was home raising babies. While the men were learning corporate strategy, I was learning to stay calm and collected under pressure when my toddlers were in hysterics. While the men were building professional identities, I learned to shape an identity of my own that felt authentic to myself. More importantly, I've helped my teenage daughters learn to understand themselves and shape their own authentic identities.
By the time I entered the workforce, I had a lot of catching up to do. And it didn’t take long to realize the game was rigged. I was the token woman in the room, dismissed in meetings only to hear my ideas praised when repeated by a man. Told to let the men handle things I did better. Expected to work twice as hard to prove I belonged—yet still reminded to “know my place.”
