Coping Ahead

What Belongs In Your Self-Care Bag?

A Simpler Way to Prepare for the Moments That Ask Too Much

That Feeling

You know the feeling.
That moment when you hit the edge. Your chest tightens, your head pounds, your patience snaps and suddenly, everything feels too loud, too much, and too close.

We prepare emergency kits for hurricanes, power outages, even flat tires.

But what about emotional emergencies?

What about those moments when you’ve held everything together for everyone—and suddenly, your body says “no more”?

You’re drained. Overstimulated. Done.

You need a break but even figuring out what you need feels like too much.

What If You Didn’t Have to Think About Self-Care When You Needed It Most?

That’s where the self-care bag comes in.
Not as a luxury. Not as a “nice to have.” But as a life-saving pause button when you hit your emotional redline.

Think of it like an emotional emergency kit. Just like a first-aid kit helps you treat physical wounds, a self-care bag helps tend to emotional ones quickly, gently, and without needing to think.

It’s not fancy. It’s simple, portable, and personal.

It’s what you grab when your nervous system says, “I need to disappear for a minute” and helps you combat the Summer Blues.

Self-Care That Meets You Where You Are

Too often, self-care feels like another thing to figure out. In truth, self-care is any act of kindness that meets the needs of now.

Real self-care doesn’t have to be big or time-consuming. It can take:

  • A few seconds to take a deep breath with a grounding scent
  • A few minutes to press a warm pack against your chest or drink a glass of ice water
  • A few hours to journal, color, or take a nap
  • A few days to go offline, travel, or ask for real support

Whether you need seconds, minutes, hours, it’s easier to meet your needs when you plan for them in advance.

Creating Your Self-Care Bag: A Metaphor and a Practice

In our Self-Care Saturday event, we will literally sew a self-care bag. Stitch by stitch, we’ll piece together something beautiful, just like you do every day, often unseen. The real work is what we put inside, both practically and metaphorically.

The bag becomes a personalized sensory reset toolkit: a curated collection of sensory objects and soul-soothing tools that meet your needs without overthinking. It’s simple, portable, and made for you.

Because when you’re at your limit, you don’t need another decision to make.

You need ease.
You need comfort.
You need care.

The bag doesn’t judge. It doesn’t rush. It just waits for you to remember yourself again.

This is your emergency kit for emotional weather.
Simple. Sensory. Sacred.

And when life gets loud?
You’ll know exactly what to reach for.

What to Include in a Sensory Self-Care Bag?

There’s no “right” list, only what works for you. But we encourage including something for all five senses. Why? Because our senses are the fastest way to ground ourselves when we feel emotionally dysregulated.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Sight

  • A small photo that makes you feel safe or joyful
  • An inspiring quote or affirmation card
  • A tiny art print or mandala to trace with your eyes
  • A treasured keepsake that reminds you of a loved one

Sound

  • A pair of headphones + a favorite playlist
  • A small bell or chime
  • A musical instrument or sheet music if you’re musically inclined

Smell

  • Essential oils or scented candles
  • Bath bombs or scented body washes or scrubs and lotions
  • Recipes for baking

Taste

  • Herbal tea bags, coffee, hot cocoa
  • Mints, gum, or candies
  • A piece of dark chocolate (wrapped—bonus: it doesn’t melt quickly!)

Touch

  • A smooth worry stone or fidget that you like
  • A soft blanket or fuzzy socks or hoodie
  • A journal and pen that feels good in your hand

And don’t forget the emotional basics:

  • A note to yourself from a grounded version of you
  • A card that says, “You don’t have to be okay right now.”
  • A list of coping skills that actually help you (not the ones you think you “should” use)
